This Privacy Policy describes how the Portl Share application ("the App") handles information. By using the App, you agree to the practices described below.

Information We Collect

We do not collect any personal data. Portl Share is a fully offline, local-network file transfer application. The App does not collect, store, transmit, or process any personally identifiable information, usage analytics, crash reports, device identifiers, advertising IDs, or telemetry of any kind.

No user accounts are required to use the App. There is no registration, login, or cloud-based functionality.

How the App Works

Portl Share establishes direct connections between devices on the same local Wi-Fi network or hotspot. Files are transferred directly from one device to another without passing through any external server, relay, or cloud service. All communication stays within your local network.

The App reads your device's brand and model name (e.g. "Samsung Galaxy S24") solely to display a recognizable device name to other users on the local network during discovery. This information is not stored, logged, or transmitted outside your local network.

Permissions and Their Purpose

The App requests the following device permissions. Each is used exclusively for the described purpose and never to collect or transmit personal data:

• Internet (INTERNET): Required to open local network sockets for device-to-device file transfer over Wi-Fi. The App does not make any external internet requests or connect to remote servers.
• Wi-Fi Multicast (CHANGE_WIFI_MULTICAST_STATE): Required to discover other Portl Share instances on your local network using mDNS (multicast DNS).
• Storage (READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, READ_MEDIA_IMAGES, READ_MEDIA_VIDEO, READ_MEDIA_AUDIO, MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE): Required to read files you select for sharing and to save files received from other devices. The App only accesses files you explicitly choose or incoming transfers you accept.
• Camera (CAMERA): Used only when you choose to scan a QR code to quickly connect to another device. The camera feed is processed locally in real-time and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted.
• Foreground Service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC): Runs a visible notification while the sharing server is active, ensuring the operating system does not terminate file transfers in progress when the App is in the background. The notification reads "Portl Share Active — Sharing is active on your local network."
• Wake Lock (WAKE_LOCK): Prevents the device CPU from sleeping during an active file transfer so that transfers complete reliably.

Third-Party Services and SDKs

The App does not integrate any third-party analytics services, advertising SDKs, crash reporting tools, social media SDKs, or cloud storage services. There are no third-party services that receive data from the App.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not share, sell, trade, or otherwise transfer any user information to any third party. Since no data is collected, there is no data to share.

Data Retention and Deletion

The App stores your preferences (such as device display name and theme setting) locally on your device using standard platform storage. This data never leaves your device. You can clear all App data through your device's system settings at any time.

Data Security

File transfers within the App use HTTPS with TLS encryption over your local network. Connection authentication uses cryptographic tokens (JWT) to verify that only authorized devices can access shared files.

Children's Privacy

The App does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. The App is not directed at children and does not knowingly solicit data from minors.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the "Effective date" at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
